Off We Go!

On June 20, 2013, my husband and I are off on a 50 day, cross-Canada motorcycle trip. This blog will share our route, travel tips, photos and highlights of the trip. Photos from this trip will also be the source material for my next painting series, "Canadian Roadtrip" which I hope to complete in 2014. Some Pre-Trip Planning

We like to travel fairly spontaneously. A good mix of pre-planning for a loose itinerary and some research about the things we want to MAKE SURE we get to see (for instance - L'Ainse aux Meadows - the UNESCO World Heritage Site viking settlement on the farthest northeast tip of Newfoundland...) but then we use it as a ballpark guide, allowing for flexibility in both route and schedule as the trip unfolds. It's been our experience that some of the best parts of a trip are spontaneous and not planned for. (This was very much the case in our 2010 trip to Italy...)

The Harley-Davidson website trip planner has been very helpful for plotting out our general route as it gives distances and estimated travel times which are helpful. You can also load your itineraries right into your GPS if you choose. You need to be a HOG member to access this tool through your online account. Trip Advisor, of course, is an invaluable tool (as are many other travel apps we've got loaded on our iPad) for quick information on accommodations, restaurants, sites etc.

We will be travelling with our Lees-ure Lite pop-up tent trailer which is a THING OF BEAUTY for those interested in a FANTASTIC trailer for a motorbike or small car. They're made in Osooyos, BC and are impressive in both design, quality and ease of pulling (you can't even tell it's there...) We really recommend them.

Some people have asked about what we're riding. I have a 2006 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail and my husband rides a 2011 Harley Davidson Tri-Glide. One of the best pieces of gear we've purchased are our Airhawk seat pads. I wouldn't leave home without mine. Also, our electric vests...

At the moment, it looks like we'll be covering somewhere between 16,000 - 17,000 kms on our trip. We will be leaving home (in British Columbia), dipping our toes in the Atlantic in Newfoundland and Labrador and heading back again. I will post our rough itinerary in the next couple of weeks...
